I want you to imagine something. Imagine we did to physical fitness exactly what we do to reading. Every year, every kid takes a standardized fitness test. The results come back as a percentile. Half the kids are below the 50th percentile — as they always will be, because that is what a percentile means — and those kids are identified as at risk. They get pulled from recess. From gym class. From any unstructured physical activity that might actually be enjoyable. And they are placed in a fitness intervention. A room with treadmills. A structured cardiovascular program. Supervised drill work. More measurement. More percentile comparison. More documentation of how far behind they are. The kids who love to run keep running at recess. The kids who struggle with fitness get pulled from the running and put on a treadmill alone to work on their running scores. Everyone would call that cruel. Every parent in this country would read that description and say: let the kid play. Let them move. Let them find the thing they love to do with their body and do it badly for a while and get better. That is how you build a healthy adult. Not by pulling them from recess and drilling them on cardiovascular data. So why is reading different?
