Families arriving for this weekend’s National Future Champions Invitational will now complete a college-major declaration before athletes receive their pool-play wristbands.
Tournament officials described the requirement as a modest planning tool designed to connect each 11-year-old’s current warm-up habits with a responsible academic and athletic future.
“We are not putting pressure on children,” Event Pathway Director Chad Rutkowski said. “We are simply asking them to identify a major, preferred university, likely scholarship percentage, and backup transfer destination before first pitch.”
A simple family process
The declaration packet is only 19 pages. Players must list their intended field of study, projected graduation year, preferred name-image-likeness opportunities, and whether they are currently open to institutions outside the Power Four conferences.
Parents must initial each page and provide a short statement explaining how the athlete’s 2-for-17 performance last month demonstrated resilience, leadership, and projectable bat speed.
Children who are unsure may select Undeclared, although officials caution that the designation could signal a lack of focus to evaluators who are not attending the event.
More exposure, responsibly managed
Organizers also introduced colored lanyards showing each athlete’s declared pathway. Engineering prospects receive navy. Business prospects receive gold. Players considering the arts receive a discreet gray badge and information about opportunities to manage the team’s social media.
The tournament emphasized that no college coaches have requested the information. The form exists so families can be ready when coaches eventually realize how much useful information has already been collected.
A new $85 Pathway Verification Package allows parents to place a silver seal on the declaration. The seal does not certify the athlete’s academics, athletic ability, or college interest, but it confirms the paperwork was submitted through the official portal.
Communication begins immediately
After submitting the form, each athlete receives a recruiting communication plan. The plan recommends one weekly highlight post, one gratitude post, one adversity post, and one carefully casual photograph showing the player doing homework near sports equipment.
Parents are encouraged to create a separate athlete account so college programs can follow the journey from middle school without sorting through unrelated family content. The account biography must include graduation year, position, height, unofficial exit velocity, and the phrase student-athlete in that order.
Officials reminded families that the process is not about attention. It is about making sure attention will be available if it becomes important. Players who prefer privacy may choose the low-visibility package, which limits distribution to tournament staff, partner evaluators, affiliated media accounts, registered vendors, and anyone who scans the roster QR code.
Coaches will receive a communication calendar showing when to congratulate players publicly without creating the appearance of favoritism. Every athlete will be recognized, although recognition order will follow the verified pathway tier selected during registration. Organizers said this preserves fairness because every family had the same opportunity to purchase the tier that best communicates equal treatment.
Adjustments remain available
Tournament officials understand that young athletes develop quickly. Families may change a major after pool play for a $40 administrative fee. Position changes require a separate form because athletic identity affects the educational plan.
One parent asked whether children could simply play the games and think about college later. Rutkowski said the tournament respects every family’s process.
“There is no one pathway,” he explained. “Some families begin planning at nine. Others wait until eleven and accept that they are entering the process later.”
Mr. Yeser endorsed the new system. “Naturally,” he said. “A child cannot enjoy Saturday until the adults have documented how Saturday supports the next ten years. Otherwise it is only a game, and there is no responsible column for that.”
Players must submit declarations by 6:45 a.m. Saturday. The first game begins at 8:10, weather permitting. The college decision is binding through Sunday.
